MONDAY SCHOLASTICS: Cheshire swimming makes it 34 straight; Sheehan falls to Amity

CHESHIRE — The Cheshire girls swim team opened its season Monday night with a 96-80 SCC victory over Foran at Cheshire Community Pool.

With the victory, coach Dan Mascolo and his Rams pocketed their 34th straight dual-meet decision.

This meet featured first-time individual wins for a few Cheshire freshmen: Ali Tyler in the 200-yard IM (2:12.8), Sophie Murphy in the 50 freestyle (24.24) and Bella Tejeda in the 100 butterfly (1:01.9).

Tyler and Murphy also teamed with Liz Boyer and Julia Stevens on two winning relays, the 200 medley (1:48.95) and 400 freestyle (3:39.92).

Boyer later won the 100 freestyle in 54.49 and Stevens the 500 in 5:08.20.

Also touching first for Cheshire were Esther Han (200 free, 2:01.71), Jillian Stevens (backstroke, 1:02.67) and Elli Haskes (breaststroke, 1:11.56).

Lavana Gulati, Grace Pettit, Samantha Grenon and Caitlin Caron teamed to win the 200 free (1:47.34).

Amity 97, Sheehan 74: The Spartans out-swam the Titans in Wallingford in a season-opening SCC crossover meet.

Marissa Soldi won diving for the home team with 189.95 points and Lila Pickering won the 100 backstroke in 1:37.21.

The Titans also took the 200 freestyle relay behind Rachel Kerrigan, Amy Bui, Catherine Neal and Katelyn Cosgrove 2:00.22. Kerrigan won the 100 breaststroke in 1:29.23.

Boys soccer

Choate 5, Cheshire Academy 0: After a scoreless first 28 minutes, the Wild Boars exploded for three goals before the break to post the NEPSAC win in Wallingford in the season opener for both teams.

Girls soccer

Wilcox Tech 1, Grasso Tech 1: Tatiana Gonzalez converted a penalty kick for the Tribe to forge the CTC tie in Meriden. Cheshire Academy 2, Rye County Day 2: Jayden Reilly scored one goal and assisted on the other to lead the Cats (0-1-1) to the tie in Rye, N.Y.

Reilly scored off a feed from Sela Wiley and, in turn, set up Jaelynn Pittman. Goalie Brie Bavaro notched 20 saves.

Field hockey

Rye County Day 3, Cheshire Academy 1: Lucey Savino had the goal for the visiting Cats (1-1) off an assists from Feize Turkmen. Alexis Shanok had seven saves in net.

Girls volleyball

Platt 3, Berlin 0: The Panthers improved to 2-0 with the CCC South Colonial Division sweep in Berlin. Game scores were 26-24, 25-16 and 25-17.

Machalia Arjavich had a big night. The senior posted 11 kills and nine digs.

Vanessa Isyk (16 digs) and Lillian Montana (15) anchored the back row. Isyk also served up five aces.

Kiara Lopez added eight kills and seven digs for the Blue & Gold.

Jennifer Rita had seven kills and six digs. Caitlyn Hart handed out 29 assists while also getting to seven digs.

Maloney 3, Middletown 0: A 25-14, 25-16, 25-21 CCC South-Colonial sweep of the Blue Dragons in Middletown improved the Spartans to 2-0.

Maloney was torrid from the service line. Anna Hendrickson landed eight aces. Isabel Frazza had four and Melane Polanco added three.

Polanco was also good for 11 kills and seven digs.

Hendrickson got to 10 digs and collected six kills. Frazza added eight digs.

Southington 3, Conard 0: The Blue Knights stand at 2-0 following the CCC West Colonial Division decision in West Hartford.

Sparked by setter Steph Zera’s 32 assists, Southington won by game scores of 25-12, 25-20 and 25-23.

Hannah Zelina was solid in all three phases with nine digs, six kills and six aces. Haley Larrabee kicked in eight digs and seven kills.

Erica Bruno had a team-high eight kills. Brooke Cooney landed three aces.
