TUESDAY SWIMMING: Southington rookies fire off the blocks


ROCKY HILL — Freshmen Maddie Symecko and Meghan Hammarlund made splashy debuts for the Southington girls swimming team Tuesday, each winning a pair of individual events to help the Blue Knights defeat Rocky Hill 92-81 in their season opener.

Symecko, a distance freestyler, won the 200 in 2:11.27 and the 500 in 5:52.17. Hammarlund reeled in the 200-yard IM (2:27.05) and 100 backstroke (1:05.04).

Symecko and Hammarlund also teamed with Kara Zazzaro and Anny Moquete on the first-place 400 freestyle relay (4:19.32).

Zazzaro took first in the 100 freestyle (1:04.07) and joined Olivia Fournier, Andie Nadeau and Julie Duszak on the winning 200 free relay (1:48.72).

Fournier and Duszak opened the meet teaming with Hammarlund and Kayla Nguyen on the medley relay (1:58.92) and later won individual events, Fournier the 50 free (25.58) and Duszak the 100 breaststroke (1:12.84).

Hand 95, Lyman Hall 90: Nicole Cislo won two events and swam in two winning relays for the Trojans in the SCC loss to the Tigers at the Sheehan pool.

Cislo was best in the 100 freestyle (57.77) and 100 breaststroke (1:16.21). She was part of the victorious 200 medly relay team with Faith Gambardella, Maeve Montante and Sarah Beverage (2:00.12).

Gambardella, Cislo, Beverage and Kristina Driscoll were were tops in the 200 free relay in 1:50.06.

Beverage took first in the 50 free (26.50) and Gambardella in the 100 backstroke (1:06.59) for the Trojans (1-1).

The Tigers are 1-0.
