TUESDAY SOCCER: Maloney lays siege to Blue Dragons; Sheehan girls win in closing minute


MIDDLETOWN — Ben Pierce tallied a hat trick Tuesday afternoon to power the Maloney boys soccer team to a 5-0 CCC South Colonial Division rout of Middletown.

John Sanchez and Noah Lopez added the other two goals for Maloney, which bounced back from Saturday night’s 1-0 seasno-opening loss to Berlin.

Guadalupe Martinez totaled the shutout with three saves.

Middletown, like Maloney, is 1-1.

Southington 1, Conard 1: The Blue Knights came away with their second CCC West-Colonial tie in as many games this season, following a home tie with Hall on Friday with Tuesday’s road draw with the Chieftains (1-0-1) in West Hartford.

Alexis Frausto scored for Southington in the first half. Matt Flanagan’s goal with 14:01 left in regulation was the equalizer.

John Griffin played well in net for Southington after replacing an injured Evan Daddona in the first half. Daddona and Griffin combined on eight saves. Conard’s Vincent Conelli had six.

Branford 7, Lyman Hall 2: Marzio Mastroianni knocked home goals as the Hornets routed the Trojans in a SCC interdivisional matchup in Wallingford.

Branford, coming off a 6-0 romp of East Haven in its season opener, improved to 2-0.

Lyman Hall, a 7-3 winner over Coginchaug in its opener, fell to 1-1. Jack Gaynor scored both goals for the Trojans. He already has five on the season.

Berlin 9, Platt 0: Noah Silverman scored five times for the Redcoats in a CCC South Colonial Division tilt at Sage Park.

Joe Pettinelli added two goals for Berlin (2-0). Ryan Jenkins and Curtis Arcari had one apiece.

Cam Germe made eight stops and Jack Nelson made two in net for Platt.

Alec Perry played well at center back for the Panthers (0-2).


Sheehan 2, Branford 1: Sam Larkin converted a free kick from Kelsey Burr in the final minute of regulation to snap a 1-1 tie and lift the Titans to the SCC victory in Branford.

The goal came with 38 seconds on the clock.

Burr scored the first goal for Sheehan in the first half off an assist from Grace Waldron. Taylor Brown got Branford on the board in the 69th minute.

Sheehan out-shot Branford 11-7. Avery Holden had six saves for Sheehan. Nina Grabowicki grabbed nine for Branford.

The game was the season opener for the Titans. Branford fell to 0-1-1.
