Once-vacant stretch of Route 5 in Wallingford is now filled

WALLINGFORD — Six months ago, three buildings alongside each other on Route 5 were vacant.

Now, the buildings have new owners and the town has three new restaurants — the latest being Don Giovanni Bistro.

The Italian restaurant recently opened its doors in the former Basil’s restaurant at 680 N. Colony Road. The restaurant is owned by the same family that owns Captain Seas, 905 N. Colony Road, said Fani Manos.

Manos said his family has been in the restaurant business for the past 35 years. Don Giovanni Bistro had a soft opening last week, and held an open house Tuesday.

Joe Mirra, chairman of the Economic Development Commission, said he thinks the vacant buildings were filled relatively quickly because of the location and the town’s business reputation.

When the EDC is made aware of a vacancy, notices are sent to site planners, site selectors and posted on a website.

“It’s a hot location,” Mirra said of the Route 5 stretch. “It’s well traveled and the right size and right building. “

While Route 5 already has numerous restaurants, Mirra believes the new ones will succeed.

“It’s just getting the name out.” Mirra said.”It’s another complement to the fine restaurants that we have to the town.”

The other two buildings, 684 and 731 N. Colony Road, were home to MJ Duke’s and KFC.

Taqueria El Amigo, a restaurant featuring Mexican food, will open at 684 N. Colony Road. Mozzicato DePasquale Bakery and Pastry Shop recently opened a branch at 731 N. Colony Road.
