I-91 crash kills garbage truck driver

WALLINGFORD — A garbage truck rolled over on Interstate 91 north between exits 13 and 14 Thursday afternoon, killing the driver and injuring the front-seat passenger.

Joseph Palmisano, 55, of New Britain, died in the crash. Clayton Shepard, 57, of Windsor Locks, was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, according to a state police accident report.

Battalion Chief Jim Duffy of the Wallingford Fire Department said firefighters found the truck flipped over in an area of brush on the side of the highway after the accident, which occurred at about 2:30 p.m. Shepard had to be extricated from the vehicle, he said.

State police remained on the scene investigating the crash into the evening. The highway’s right and center lanes were closed for hours.

The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection also responded because fluids spilled from the truck, Duffy said.
