Elderly man assaulted in Wallingford over jaywalking dispute

WALLINGFORD — A California man faces assault charges after police say he got into an argument that ended with an elderly man lying in the street Tuesday night.

Christopher Olivier, 35, of California was arrested and charged with third-degree assault of an elderly person and breach of peace.

Lt. Cheryl Bradley said the incident began at the intersection of Main and Center streets, about 10:20 p.m. Olivier was walking and jaywalked, police said. An elderly man driving by yelled out his window and pulled over, Bradley said. The two men got into an argument, Bradley said. Olivier then shoved the elderly man, who was knocked to the ground, and Olivier fled the scene, Bradley said.

Officers found Olivier minutes later on South Main Street, Bradley said.

Fire crews also responded and took the man to Yale-New Haven Hospital, Battalion Chief Joseph Czentnar said. The man was treated, receiving staples in the back of his head, and later released, Bradley said.

Olivier was held in lieu of $20,000 bail and was scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday in Meriden Superior Court. (203) 317-2225 Twitter: @LaurenSievertRJ
