FILIPEK TENNIS: Championships settled, scholarships awarded on tourney’s final day

CHESHIRE — Champions were crowned in 19 divisions. A dozen scholarships were handed out. The sun shone, too.

It was hard to find a fault — other than of, say, the foot variety — on the final day of the 2017 Wint Filipek Sr. Memorial Tennis Tournament at Copper Valley Swim & Tennis Club.

“I would say this year went better than any other year,” said Wint Filipek Jr., the tournament director. “Other than one day, the weather cooperated and we have a beautiful day for the championship matches this Sunday.”

Highlights of those matches included Brian Bucknam’s comeback upset of top-seeded and perennial tournament favorite Aaron Kusza 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 in Men’s A Singles.

Kusza did find redemption in the Mixed A Doubles final. He and playing partner Julia Migliorini, as the No. 2 seed, defeated top-seeded Scott Neufeld and Kim McCarthy 6-1, 6-7 (7-3), 6-4.

Seeding held in Women’s A Singles. No. 1 Juliet Burdelski topped Julie Condit 6-0, 6-4.

Among the high school set, Sheehan junior Justine Hoover was a double winner. The top seed beat No. 2 Monika Krah 6-3, 6-1 in the High School Girls Singles final, then teamed with Krah to win the doubles division 6-1, 6-3 over Southington sisters Abby and Molly Murphy.

Two former Cheshire High players teamed to win Men’s B Doubles. Jackson Ajello and Dennis Ryley got past Chip and Lucian Boyd 7-5, 6-4.

“The last day of the tournament is always the best,” said Ajello. “Not only are the championship matches played, but there’s also a big breakfast beforehand. It’s kind of like a big celebration of tennis in the area and it’s for a good cause.”

“All the matches are always competitive and it’s always a good time,” said Ryley. “This was our first year playing together and winning this event, so it’s just a lot of fun.”

Maria Avgustinova of Rocky Hill returned to the Filipek Tournament afer a five-year absence. She won Mixed B Doubles with Rob Simon. They defeated Ivelisse and Todd Piker 6-2, 6-4.

“When I played five years ago, I wasn’t so successful,” Avgustinova said. “This time, though, out of nowhere, I’ve had great success.”

Avgustinova was also in the Women’s A Doubles final. She and partner Mara Sautori-Lopes ended up losing via injury default to sisters Julia and Emily Migliorini of North Haven.

The Migliorini sisters were leading comfortably 6-1, 5-0. Julia is a sophomore who plays for North Haven High School. Emily is going into her junior year and plays for Connecticut College.

“We’ve been coming here since we were little,” said Julia. “We’ve won other events, but this was our first time playing together in a tournament.”

“This tournament is a fun thing to do every year,” said Emily. “The competition is always good and the event has grown every year.”

For another year, the Filipek field numbered 600. When the weather did not cooperate early last week, Filipek and tournament organizers kept the show rolling by moving matches to indoor courts.

“We have a committee that finds indoor facilities in the central Connecticut area for us to use,” Filipek said. “We had a lot of cooperation from the indoor facilities in Connecticut.”

Meanwhile, the 12 scholarships awarded Sunday put the tournament over $140,000 for scholarship money donated over its 13-year history.
