Despite pandemic, Berlin welcomes new businesses

BERLIN — The town held 25 official ribbon cutting and ground breaking ceremonies between May 2020 and April 2021, compared to six held between May 2019 and April 2020.

The total includes businesses that opened and expanded. The establishments include five restaurants and eateries, two fitness centers, four personal service businesses, five retail stores (three with showrooms), a massage and physical therapy center, financial services center, manufacturing and mechanical services center, a social club, and a family-owned commercial flooring firm.

“The number of businesses, developers, and entrepreneurs that chose to locate in Berlin during the past year is great news for our town’s economic future,” said Mayor Mark Kaczynski.

Additionally, the town welcomed two residential/commerical projects. Steele Center at 889 Farmington Ave. and Turnpike Ridge at 220 Berlin Turnpike are slated to provide new jobs, new retail spaces and new apartments. The two developments include over $30 million in private investment.

“To see this much mixed-use development under construction, especially during COVID, says a lot about what the commercial and residential development community think about Berlin,” said Economic Development Commission Chairman Dave Cyr.
