BERLIN — The Board of Finance approved a transfer of $54,000 into the Buildings & Renovations account of the Police Station Construction Fund for two new interview rooms.
Police Chief John Klett said that these were improvements the department had previously identified and had wanted to complete during their jail cell renovations in 2019. The Town Council had approved $251,000 for those improvements.
Klett said that the $54,000 would be used to create “soft” and “hard” interview rooms – soft interviews for non criminal cases and hard interviews for interrogations.
According to state statutes, Klett said that hard interrogation rooms need to be fitted with recording equipment.
“We currently have to bring them in the conference room and use a laptop because we don’t have the room,” he said. “These two rooms are the last things we can do without spending a lot of money.”
Finance Director Kevin Delaney said that the department would be using the same contractor they used for constructing the new jail cells, Bismark Construction of Milford. Completing the interview rooms would be an extension of the department’s original contract with the contractor.
$22,981.85 will be transferred into the Buildings & Renovations account from the Jail Cells account in the Police Station Construction Fund, another $14,834.41 from the Transfer to Other Funds account in the Griswold Portable Classroom fund and $16,183.84 will be transferred from the In Lieu of Sick (retiree) account in the General Fund.
