State police urge holiday drivers to take advantage of Uber discount

BERLIN — In an effort to avoid traffic fatalities, state police are publicizing a ride service discount available during the holiday season.

Police, concerned about what they described as rising traffic fatalities, have started the Save The Night Connecticut project, which offers a $10 discount code for Uber rides. They are encouraging those who drink this holiday season to use ride services instead of putting themselves and others at risk on the road. The state Department of Transportation Office of Highway Safety also helped to create the discount.

In Berlin alone there have been three fatal motor vehicle crashes since the Labor Day weekend, according to the Berlin Police Department.

The discount code — SAVETHENIGHTCT — is available through Jan. 14 between 5 p.m. and 4 a.m.

This program was made possible through a grant from the Governors Highway Safety Association, in partnership with Uber.

“Traffic fatalities are increasing at an unprecedented rate,” state DOT Commissioner Joseph Giulietti said in a statement. “It is a real crisis. If you or someone you know, needs a sober ride, please opt for a ride and use this $10 Uber discount code to save the night, and potentially, save a life.”
