Third grader wins state-wide poster contest

Griswold Elementary School third grader Olivia Schweitzer took first place in the Woodsy Owl poster contest for the state of Connecticut.

Poster entrees must be sponsored by a local garden club. Olivia’s art was sponsored by the Kensington Garden Club, in which both of her grandmothers are members.

Olivia was presented with a Certificate of Achievement by Dottie Fox, Youth Chairman for the Federated Garden Clubs of CT, Inc., a bouquet of roses, and other gifts.

Olvia’s winning poster will next be judged by the National Garden Club, Inc. and the U.S. Forest Service.

Since 1961, the Woodsy Owl poster contest has helped promote the friendly character and his conservation message of “Lend a Hand, Care for the Land!”

Woodsy Owl challenges youngsters to take an active role in caring for the land through recycling, reusing, and reducing waste, planting and caring for trees, using resources wisely, and not littering.
