BERLIN — Customers flocked to the newly opened Arby’s on Farmington Avenue over the weekend for a chance to win free meals every week for a year.

“It’s been a great day. Lots of people, lots of excitement,” said Tiffany Miron, director of operations for Pandya Restaurant Group, the new franchisee.

The awards were given out to the first 50 customers after local government officials and store management held a ribbon cutting ceremony in front of the 1241 Farmington Ave. restaurant on Saturday.

The eatery is Pandya’s first Connecticut restaurant and was identified as a good location partly because the building was previously home to an Arby’s before it closed around 2013, Miron said.

Town Economic Development Director Chris Edge said he feels the frontage along Farmington Avenue also made it a strong location.

“It’s nice to have a well known name like Arby’s come back to Berlin,” he said. “ … It brings vibrancy back to a corner that’s been dead for a while.”

The business returned Dec. 21 with a revamped menu, featuring more healthy and diverse options, plus an interior renovation that Edge said makes it bear little resemblance to a traditional fast food restaurant.

For Miron, though, Arby’s success is due to its food.

“I’m going to be corny, but we have the meats,” she said. “People like the meats.”
