BERLIN – Local veterans will be remembered and honored this month with the second annual Veterans Day Memorial Tree displayed inside Berlin-Peck Memorial Library.
“It’s another way of recognizing all that they’ve done for us,” said Helen Malinka, library director.
The Kensington Garden Club recently set up the tree with veterans’ names printed on paper ornaments. Last year, was the first time the tree was displayed.
“It’s a nice way to remember those no longer with us,” said Tracy Shipman, head of the club’s tree committee.
The ornaments have different colored stars to indicate veterans still living (blue), those that have died (silver) and those killed in action or held as prisoner of war (gold).
Shipman’s grandfather, a World War II veteran who died recently, will have a silver star.
“There are fewer and fewer World War II veterans left,” Shipman said.
The tree will be on display until the end of the month.
Over 20 names have been submitted.
