Boxes to Boots to hold open house Saturday

Berlin-based Boxes to Boots is dedicated to mailing love and thanks to troops serving overseas in the form of cards, goodies and supplies.

Boxes to Boots will host an open house Saturday, Oct. 23, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., at its headquarters, 39 Mill St. Stop by to see what the local non-profit is all about, and to drop of a donation.

Items needed include small packs of cookies, sunflower seeds, nuts, fruit snacks, beef jerky, Pringles and salty snacks, tuna in a pouch, energy bars, granola bars, small cans of Vienna sausage, water enhancers, stress balls, fidget spinners, lip balm, and travel size baby wipes and board games.

Boxes to Boots headquarters is scheduled to be open Monday through Thursday, 4 to 7 p.m., and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Donations also may be dropped off at the Senior Center and Peck-Memorial Library. Mia Bella, 883 Farmington Ave., and A Shear Perfection, 1225 Farmington Ave., also are drop-off locations.

Flag fundraiser

Boxes to Boots is sponsoring a “Flags of Appreciation” fundraiser for Veterans Day, Thursday, Nov. 11, at Veterans’ Memorial Park on Farmington Avenue.

Show your appreciation for a veteran or someone currently serving by sponsoring an American flag in their honor. The flags will line the park's America’s Wars Walkway on Nov. 11 and 12.

Each 12-by-18-inch flag will have a card attached outlining the service details of the honoree. Flags are $10. Find the order form on the Boxes to Boots website, boxestoboots.org. The deadline to order is Sunday, Nov. 7.

The “Flags of Appreciation” fundraiser is open to all; not just residents of Berlin. Proceeds will be used to offset the cost of shipping care packages to troops serving overseas.
