Quick-thinking pair honored

The Berlin Police Department said a pair of “amazing women” saved a life earlier this month.

A BPD social media post explains that on Nov. 8, Carmela Piccione witnessed a man near her home who appeared to be suffering a heart attack. Piccione went to help, and was joined by Nikki Vernacatola, who happened to be driving by.

“The selfless acts by these women and the heroic efforts made to save this man's life exemplifies their noble character … The efforts of both women and other Berlin PD officers saved this man's life,” the Berlin PD wrote.

The responding officer that day was Daniel Ithier, who recently awarded Piccione and Vernacatola with Appreciation Challenge Coins.

The Berlin Police Department’s post praising Piccione and Vernacatola elicited plenty of positive responses online.

One Facebook user stated: “Two heroes! Way to go Carmela n Nikki - the world needs more like you!”

Another commented: “Wonderful work, Ladies! So happy you're in this community.”
