CHESHIRE — The COVID-19 pandemic has forced many local businesses to put future endeavors on hold as they consider the economic outlook.
But it appears two new businesses are ready to push forward with plans to open in town, and that should have local beer lovers ready to raise a glass in celebration.
In the last year, two breweries — Counter Weight Brewing and Cheshire Craft Brewing — have announced their intentions to open. Counter Weight, now located in Hamden, recently filed construction designs with the Planning Department.
According to the plans, the new Counter Weight building will be located at 7 Diana Court and will take over the 20,000-square-foot building and parking spaces currently on the property.
“We are really excited that they are going to be in town, and can’t wait for them to open up shop,” said Jerry Sitko, the town’s economic development coordinator. “I’ve been working with them for a while now, so it’s nice to see everything finally come to fruition.”
The plans call for the brewery to eventually encompass 140,000 square feet, including tasting rooms, multiple brewing areas, packaging and canning rooms, a full bar and merchandising area. The brewing rooms will have viewing windows so that patrons will be able to watch the process.
Counter Weight is also looking to add dining and outdoor entertainment.
While there might have been some concerns that the continued economic uncertainty could derail the Hamden-based brewery’s plans, owners put those fears to rest at the end of August, informing their customers via their Facebook page on the status of the move.
“It’s probably no surprise to most that our new building has been delayed a bit with all that has gone on this year,” they posted on Aug. 31. “We’re excited to be making lots of progress with our new home and really think that the extra time we’ve had to plan will pay off. We can’t wait to share it with all of you and will do our best to update you as we continue to make progress. Thank you for your continued support!”
Cheshire Craft Brewing will be located at 125 Commerce Court and will offer tasting rooms along with the possibility of outdoor live music and food trucks. Construction has already begun, and Cheshire Craft Brewing hopes to open in early 2021, according to their website.
The breweries will be located less than two miles apart.
