Cheshire church to hold monthly community dinners

CHESHIRE — The town’s oldest church is looking to do its part in uniting the community.

In an effort to reach anyone in the community in need of food or fellowship, the First Congregational Church will hold its first-ever community dinner on Thursdayfrom 5:30 to 7 p.m.

“The church has known for some time that they need to reach out to others,” said Henry McNulty, a member of First Congregational. “We have been trying to be more relevant in town, and many churches in the surrounding areas have begun doing community dinners and we thought it would be a great idea.”

“The Dinner Bell Community Meal” is open to anyone. There is no cost and attendees do not have to be members of the church. The dinners, according to organizers, are an opportunity for community members to get to know one another and share like ideas over one unifying meal.

“The idea of feeding people really stood out to us because we love to eat and we are a church that does food well,” remarked Alison McCaffrey, associate minister at the First Congregational Church. “We really want people who are hungry for not just food to come and share the space with us.”

The menu will include baked ham, macaroni and cheese, salad, dinner rolls, dessert, juice, coffee, and water. All the food will be prepared by church members.

And this won’t be a one-time event for First Congregational Church, located at 111 Church Drive. Members plan on continuing the dinners each month.

“We really want to extend the offer to local businesses and people in town who may want to help with donations or serving the people who come,” said McCaffrey. “We will also have live entertainment at all the dinners, so people who are interested in performing can come as well.”

“The Dinner Bell Community Meal” will be offered on the last Thursday of each month, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the church’s Parish Hall. For more information about the event, call the church office at (203) 272-5323.
