Cheshire group that supports veterans added To AmazonSmile List

CHESHIRE — In recent weeks, the situation in Afghanistan has gone from serious to dire.

The removal of American troops from the country has escalated many fears. Many veterans and civilians have been watching the events unfold on television and might be looking for a way to help.

One local charity, focused on remembering veterans of foreign wars, may have a solution.

Because of the Brave, a nonprofit created by local teen Hayley Falk has been striving to organize events that educate the area’s youth on the sacrifices that  veterans have made, including those who have given their lives for their country. The group also supports first responders.

“It is so important to remember those who have come before us and those who have given the ultimate sacrifice for us to be free,” Falk said. “And now, people can use AmazonSmile to give to our organization.”

AmazonSmile is a website operated by Amazon that will donate 0.5% of any eligible purchase — made using the AmazonSmile portal — to a charity registered with the program, at no extra cost to the customer or the charity. Since the beginning of August, Because of the Brave has been officially listed as one of the charities that can be chosen to receive the donation. Customers can also donate specific products that a participating charitable organization may have on their wish list.

“All someone has to do is make a purchase on Amazon [using the AmazonSmile portal] and some of that purchase will go to our organization,” Falk said.

Anyone interested in utilizing AmazonSmile has to register their account with the program via the portal, and then choose “Because of the Brave” under the list of options.

Since 2019, Because of the Brave has helped Cheshire honor its veterans by hosting birthday parades, raising money to lay wreaths at Arlington National Cemetery, and doing presentations for Cheshire’s Police Explorers group.
