CHESHIRE — Health officials have confirmed the town’s first positive case of COVID-19.

Officials for the Chesprocott Health District notified town leaders of the positive case, according to a news release issued early Wednesday evening.

Chesprocott is awaiting the results of two other possible cases from the state Department of Public Health.

DPH on Wednesday afternoon reported a total of 875 cases statewide. Of those cases, 113 have resulted in hospitalizations. The agency has reported 19 COVID-19 related deaths so far.

In a statement, Chesprocott Health Director Maura Esposito said the local health district was working with the impacted individual “to ensure all appropriate CDC guidance is followed to limit any potential for exposure.

Officials emphasized “the critical importance” of actions like staying at home, social distance, practicing good hygiene and other measures to limit exposure to the COVID-19 coronavirus. Officials further advised residents who feel ill to contact their primary care doctors for guidance.

Town Council Chairman Rob Oris Jr., in a prepared statement, said, “The primary concern of Chesprocott and the Town is to keep our community safe and to slow the spread of this virus.

“We are doing all we can to help protect our community, and we ask all our residents to assist our efforts by staying home as much as possible and adhering social distancing.  We send our thoughts and best wishes to our neighbor for a full recovery.”
