CHESHIRE — Department of Correction officials reported 9% of the offenders incarcerated in the statewide prison system who were tested for COVID-19 had confirmed positive for the disease, after the first round of coronavirus tests systemwide.

At the Cheshire Correctional Institution, eight of the 1,103 inmates who were tested had been confirmed COVID-19 positive. Results from testing in another facility, the Manson Youth Institution, yielded no COVID-19 positive results.

Overall, 9,504 offenders across 14 facilities were tested in a process that began on May 13 and concluded June 25, according to a DOC news release. The department stated all but two of the offenders who had tested positive as part of the mass testing did not show COVID-19-related symptoms.

According to DOC, the newly reported mass testing results did not include the 510 offenders who had previously contracted the virus. Three DOC-housed inmates are still recovering from COVID-19 related symptoms.

Meanwhile, DOC staff has also been tested, with 593 correctional officers tested to date. According to DOC, only one officer had tested positive during that mass testing. The department said 380 employees had tested positive for the novel coronavirus which causes COVID-19 since the pandemic began in early March. All but three of those employees have since recovered and returned to work. The department anticipates the three staff members who have not returned, will do so in the coming weeks.

According to the results from the latest round of testing, the facility with the largest number of offenders who tested COVID-19 positive was the Robinson Correctional Institution in Enfield, where 169, or 22%, of the 784 inmates tested were confirmed positive.
