CHESHIRE — State Police are investigating a multi-car crash that took place on Highland Avenue over the weekend and resulted in the death of a 63-year-old Cheshire man.

According to police, the incident occurred at approximately 4:15 p.m. on Saturday, on Highland Avenue, at the intersection of West Johnson Avenue.

Cheshire officers were attempting to conduct a traffic stop of a 2010 Lexus ES350, operated by Walter Spencer, 64, of Waterbury, when, according to the police report, the Lexus encroached into the southbound lane and hit a Volkswagen Jetta. The Lexus then re-entered the northbound lane and side-swiped a Jeep Commander.

After hitting the Jeep, the Lexus lost control and began to “rotate in a clockwise manner,” according to the report. It hit a Mitsubishi Eclipse and then a Ford Transit van before finally coming to a stop.

As a result of the accident, Arthur L. Wright, 63, of Cheshire, who was a passenger in the Lexus, suffered life-threatening injuries. He was rushed to St. Mary’s Hospital in Waterbury where he was later pronounced dead. The operators of the Mitsubishi and the Ford van were transported to MidState Medical Center in Meriden where they were treated for what was described as non-life-threatening injuries.

All other parties refused medical attention.

The Connecticut State Police were called in by the New Haven State’s Attorney’s Office to conduct an investigation into the incident.
