MERIDEN — Customers lined up early outside of Les’ Dairy Bar Thursday to get their first ice cream servings of the season.
Opening at noon, Amanda Hamilton, the new co-owner, was shocked at the support they received from the community. Customers ordered the popular peanut butter parfait and various flavored cones.
“I was really surprised actually,” Amanda Hamilton said. “We’ve had people coming by the last few days knocking on our window and it’s been really sad to say we’re not open yet.”
Co-owner Francis Hamilton said it was a huge coincidence that the grand opening day happened to be the same day of almost 70 degree weather. He said it was the perfect weather for the first day of the season.
Former owner, Deb DiGiandomenico, was among the first in line for a chocolate cone and four Italian ices to bring home.
Bill Baldwin, a Meriden resident was also in line early. He said he has been a customer since 1952. He said he was sad when he heard DiGiandomenico was going to close the dairy bar but happy the Hamiltons decided to take over.
“Les Anderson gave me my first ice cream cone,” Baldwin said. This is a staple for Meriden. It’s great to see it going.”
