Easter is approaching and the restaurant and deli business is looking significantly different from last year. Many food businesses struggled getting through the first major holiday following the lockdown last spring.

Filipek’s in Meriden is seeing a complete change in business compared to last year.

“Last year was terrible,” said David Martorelli, husband of owner Cindy Kenealy. “People still came and we brought out their orders to their car, but not as much. This year we have lines out the door every day.”

Filipek’s is known for serving kielbasa sausage and pierogies along with other traditional polish meals for the holiday. Customers can call ahead and pre-order larger meals or go to the business for smaller orders.

V Czapiga & Son is another popular place to order Easter dinners. They had a hard time last year but co-owner Walter Paluszewski said this year is much better.

“This year, it’s definitely looking better than last year,” he said. “Orders are still coming in, there are too many to count, which is good.”

Paluszewski said he and his wife have been working late to fill orders of kielbasa, babka and pierogies. Although it isn’t necessary to pre-order, the co-owner said many people have been in fear of the restaurant running out.
