WALLINGFORD — The opening of Neil’s Donuts second location in Middletown has been pushed to the fall.

“We’re probably not going to open until the fall, late September maybe,” said Rob Bukowski, longtime owner Neil Bukowski’s son, who will be heading the new location.

In February, the Bukowskis announced a second store coming to a new building at 211 S. Main St., also home to a Citizen’s Bank branch. They were aiming for a summer opening.

The Middletown store will have about 1,000 more square feet than the Wallingford location and include a drive-thru and outdoor patio. The new store will offer doughnuts, muffins, coffee and breakfast sandwiches, and not the cookies, cupcakes and Danish available in Wallingford. The doughnuts will be made on site in Middletown.

Since February, the lease for the building has been officially signed and Bukowski said they’ve started work on signs and the drive-thru. Now, crews are working on construction on the empty store, like installing sprinkler systems and kitchen equipment.

“We were ready to go and then this virus hit and our Wallingford store took a hit,” Bukowski said. “Now that people are slowing reopening we’re gonna start construction.”

Bukowski felt that it didn’t make sense to open during the pandemic, with most stores and restaurants at limited capacity. At the Wallingford store, only five customers are allowed in the store at once to order, and must wear a mask and stand in destination spots to adhere to social distancing.

Bukowski said they plan to start hiring for the Middletown location soon, and job listing can be found on social media.
