REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN FOR THE Y’S 41ST ANNUAL APPLE HARVEST FESTIVAL ROAD RACES

The Southington-Cheshire Community YMCA has announced that registration is open for the Y’s 41 st Annual Apple Harvest Festival Road Races. With the cancellation of the Apple Harvest Festival and the safety of the participants, staff and volunteers at the forefront, the Y will provide Southington’s hometown race in a virtual setting.

Individuals of all ages are encouraged to run/walk/hike 5 miles, a 5K (3.1 miles), 2 miles or YCUP 1-Mile Run for elementary aged children between Oct. 2 nd and Oct. 12. Participants can run, walk or hike anytime during the race duration. The Y asks that everyone practices social distancing.

“The running community has been challenged in 2020 with many races being cancelled. We are excited to continue our great tradition and help the greater community at the same time,” said Mark Pooler, Chief Executive Officer of the Southington-Cheshire Community YMCAs. “The Apple Harvest Road Race enhances our ability to give back to our community with proceeds going to support individuals and families impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.”

The first 1,000 participants who register will receive a specially designed t-shirt for this year’s historic event. A t-shirt design contest is underway until Aug. 3. Those interested should contact John Myers at jmyers@sccymca.org. All race participants will also receive a bib and certificate.

1st, 2nd, and 3rd place medals for male and females will be given out in the following age categories: 7-10, 11-15, 16-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70-79, 80 and over. The 1 st place male and female in the 5-mile race will also receive the Dave Gworek Memorial Trophy.

Three community teams are joining the Y’s Apple Harvest Festival Road Races in 2020: Team Lauryn (in honor and memory of Lauryn Ossola), Team SMSAA (in support of the Southington Middle School Athletic Association) and Team Tyler (in memory and honor of Tyler Chamberland).

Sponsorship opportunities for the race are available. Businesses and organizations interested in supporting this year’s race should contact John Myers at jmyers@sccymca.org for additional details and recognition opportunities.
