National Library Month: Reading for Pleasure Challenge

National Library Month: Reading for Pleasure Challenge

April 1-30 Southington Public Library and STEPS

April is National Library month and the Southington Public Library and STEPS have partnered in a reading challenge for Southington youth from birth to 18. The Reading for Pleasure Challenge requires participants to read, or be read to, for 15 minutes a day for the month of April. It doesn’t necessarily mean you have to read books, it can be newspapers, comics, or listening to audiobooks. If you complete the challenge you can register for family prize packages!

The STEPS program and the library want to encourage youth to engage in more reading because reading helps develop social and oral skills, it leads to increased social interaction and oral language development, becoming a source of pleasure throughout life.  Research shows that reading for pleasure at school is strongly influenced by relationships between teachers and children, and children and families. Parents are influential in developing early reading for enjoyment, and if books are valued from a young age, this is likely to continue throughout life.

Join us in this challenge and help us celebrate National Library Month!
