Local Toys For Tots DriveCollects for its 32nd year.

Hosted by Jim Fitzsimmons and family. U.S. Marines representing Toys for Tots will be onsite to haul toys from the collection.

Jim Fitzsimmons and his childhood best friend Holly Short Lafond, who share a Dec. 18, birthday, asked for toys for families in need in lieu of birthday gifts. Since then, that small gesture blossomed into an annual, community-wide toy drive for Toys for Tots. Over the past three decades Jim and Holly have collected more than 90,000 toys for the United States Marine Corp Toys for Tots Program.

This past April, Holly suddenly passed away within a month of being diagnosed with cancer. This year Jim is hosting the annual Toys for Tots Party in Holly’s honor.

The drive has already begun! Last round of collection boxes are picked up on Dec. 15.

The party at Gaetano’s is a celebration for the community for all the hard work gone into the drive. At the event, we collect and count remaining toys. The night concludes with the final count and U.S. Marines will haul away the toys from the restaurant in military vehicles.

Open to community, kids and parents, (Santa usually makes an appearance); attendees should bring an unwrapped toy for children 16 years old and younger.

Thursday, Dec.15 at 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. at Gaetano’s Tavern on Main, 40 N. Main St., (parking in the back of building or street parking).

Berlin Historical Society welcomes the public to the annual Holiday Fair at their museum, 305 Main St., Kensington on Friday, Dec. 2, from 4 – 8 p.m. and on Saturday, Dec. 3, from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.  The upstairs museum will be decorated and open for touring. Downstairs, visitors will find Berlin themed items, gift boxed homemade cookies, confections, baked goods, local artisan made items, books, pottery, honey, spices, jewelry, raffle baskets, and more.  The museum will then be open Dec. 10 and 17, from 1 – 4 p.m., before closing until April.
