The Kiwanis Club of Meriden Foundation recently awarded seven educational awards to local high school graduating seniors. In order to comply with the rules of social distancing in Connecticut, several Kiwanis Club members lined up their vehicles, decorated them with balloons and signs and traveled to the homes of the award recipients for ceremonies on their front lawns.
Eugene “Zach” Bertrand, a graduate of H. C. Wilcox Technical High School, was awarded the Maureen Bilger Educational Award. Maureen was a longtime Kiwanian and Past President who was dedicated to Kiwanis and the community of Meriden. She recently passed away and this is the first time this award was presented. The criteria is community service.
Jack Clancy, a graduate of O. H. Platt High School, received the Ann Giannetti Educational Award. Ann was a longtime Kiwanian, Past President and with her husband, Joe, had previously owned a local business. This annual award is given to a student who desires to obtain a degree in business.
Five more educational awards were presented. Recipients were; Alexis Carabetta and Grace Carabetta from St. Paul Catholic High School, Shawn Carter Shay, a graduate of Lyman Hall High School, Joanna Turner a graduate of Lyman Hall High School and John “Jack” Weinheimer a graduate of Xavier Catholic High School.
The Kiwanis Club of Meriden wishes them all success in their college careers and in their futures.
