Marsh Marigolds

Marsh Marigolds

The last Saturday in April participants gathered to walk the Quinnipiac Banton Trail to view acres of “Marsh Marigolds” (Lesser Celendine) along the Quinnipiac River in the Quinnipiac River State Park. Annually the North Haven Trail Association as stewards of the 1 mile trail to the Pines and back on the abandoned roadway host the walk with Mary Mushinsky of the Wallingford Quinnipiac Linear Trail group acting as guide.

Banton Street was abandoned in the mid 70s when three dozen families had to be relocated due to river waters rising 3-5 feet and the State created the Quinnipiac River State  Park. As you walk along the trail all that remains are remnants of foundations, fencing, driveways that go nowhere and shrubs and flowers that once enhanced their homes.

The trail is accessible to persons of all abilities including use of bikes, strollers, wheelchairs, etc. Grants have provided funds for three benches along the roadway. For more information on the  BQT and Tidal Marsh Trail contact northhaventrails.org.
