6 ways to create a relaxation space in your home



Imagine a room in your home filled with cozy pillows on the floor and a space you could call your own. In a time of high-stress and people that have become overly anxious, I have designed a space that is calming for the soul, and can be used to escape from the hustle and bustle of the world. 

My last client before COVID-19 requested a Zen space in her home. Ironically enough, this came at just the right time. Some people have a man cave or a she-shed and others just designate a specific time for yoga or working out at the gym. When work and life is hectic, we look to our home for peace and tranquility. This is especially true right now when we have molded our home and work lives together. Adults need a space that they call call their own and a community of people that we can confide in. 

Wherever you are looking to meditate, practice yoga, unwind after a long day, read a good book or listen to tranquil music, this space is designed for you.

For this client, we started with a mood board and color palette. The right color palette can make all the difference when creating the ultimate modern haven for a room. Earthy neutrals like brown, warm gray, and taupe can generate a warm and welcoming ambience. Green can also create an atmosphere of natural freshness and calm.

Simplify and Declutter

The space was very open and airy and we wanted to keep it that way. We removed all pieces from the room that didn’t need to be there. Everything must have a space and be tucked away and organized. Out of sight, out of mind.

Soothing Palette

We chose a neutral color for the walls and used earthy neutrals for the decor. We balanced the room with greenery to give good energy. We also complemented this space with gray, which is a cool, neutral, and balanced color. All of these elements come together for a home that inspires rest and relaxation from the moment you step inside.

Greenery

Our color palette encompasses greens. You can find real greenery or faux for your space. It is amazing how far we have come in the faux plant department. Sometimes I have to touch a plant to see if it is real and it amazes me with the quality. A faux cactus plant was chosen for this space. There are some really great options at Target and IKEA. 

Natural Light

We were fortunate enough to have a large picture window in this space. Natural light does wonders for people’s mood and energy. Do you ever seem to get more accomplished on a sunny day as opposed to a rainy and dreary day? We chose to leave the windows bare and let the natural light shine in. For an added effect, we chose sconces on the brick walls for a sense of calm.

Choose Comfort

This space had wood floors, so we opted for an area rug. We also chose chairs that would emulate comfort and relaxation. The chairs are deep enough to lounge and read a great book. A huge floor cushion was also added to curl up in. To create a softer and more appealing space, add throw pillows on the chair and floor.

Create Space

This was a wide open space to begin with, but to make it look larger, we added a beautiful mirror. I went with an arch mirror to create the illusion of space and maximize the amount of light. I left the rooms center to create a flow of energy. This allowed room for yoga mats and stretching.
