HEALTHY LIVING: 5 things to know about Joint Effort Exercise in Cheshire

CHESHIRE – Joint Effort, a gym tailored to the 50 plus crowd, recently opened a location in Cheshire. This past week I met with the owner, George Norden and head exercise physiologist, Brittany Webb to discuss how Joint Effort meets the needs of the aging population.

The layout of Joint Effort in Cheshire is friendly and inviting. There is plenty of natural lighting which compliments the subdued color scheme and gives the facility a homey feel.

“We want it to be welcoming for people when they come in” said Webb of the open floor plan.

Designed for those who are 50+

Webb said Joint Effort is the ideal gym for those who are not fond of working out. 

Since the facility is for people 50 and older, the staff is especially familiar with the mobility and health concerns that their clientele faces.

Webb said, the Joint Effort team offers guided exercise that is more nuanced than personal training.

She added, she’s learned how to work around joint pain, frozen shoulder, and hip replacements, which has made her a more well-rounded trainer.

Norden said the goal is to enable members to perform their hobbies and daily activities with ease.

“Giving them these basic abilities back is really what’s rewarding to us as a center” said Norden.


The equipment selection caters to the mobility issues that Joint Effort members may face.

“The weights go up by one pound so it’s easier to progress people” said Webb.

In addition to kettlebells and dumbbells, the facility also houses a variety of cardio and strength machines.

Members can stretch or do core exercises on elevated body-length benches cushioned with a thick mat for extra support.


Members are given a training program that is specific to their goals and abilities. 

Webb said the trainers calibrate the machines to members’ settings prior to their appointment.

Trainers keep track of clients’ progress using charts to log the amount of weight used, the number of reps, sets, and other performance information.

At Joint Effort, training is centered around functionality.

“We start more slowly and go lower in weight. I always tell people, I don’t want them to not be able to put their shirt on the next day” said Webb.


Webb said members are held accountable by their appointments with trainers, as well as their peers.

She added that members who train around the same time expect to see each other while exercising and will reach out if they notice someone missing from the usual group. 

When I was there for my visit, Webb addressed each member by name as they entered the facility.

She also reminded them of the next time she would be seeing them for their upcoming appointment as they left.


Webb said the cardio equipment was placed in a circular layout with socialization in mind.

She added, time goes by more quickly while participants are doing cardio and talking to one another.

Norden used the term “social-cizing” to explain the phenomenon of talking while exercising that is encouraged at Joint Effort.
