HEALTHY LIVING: Autumn offerings at Geremia Farms in Wallingford

WALLINGFORD — Geremia Farms on Barnes Road has been producing locally grown fruits and vegetables since 1914. This past weekend, I stopped by the farm stand to check out the produce.

I spoke with employee Carl Gendron of Cheshire, who is part of the Geremia family through his marriage to Lisa Gendron (formally Geremia), the daughter of the late Elizabeth and Salvatore Geremia. 

There are seven acres of greenhouses, a chicken coop, and horse stables located behind the Geremia Farms storefront. Buckets of tomatoes, corn, and an array of colorful potted plants line the entrance of the retail location.

Locally grown

There was an assortment of delectable fruits and vegetables in large barrels throughout the store when I visited. Each item was organized by produce type and labeled with its name. The items that were native to Connecticut could be identified by a green and blue depiction of the state outline.

Gendron said, “the Connecticut Grown sign means that it’s in season.”

The Connecticut Grown logo identifies agricultural items grown or raised locally as defined by the state Department of Agriculture Connecticut Grown Identity Standards.

Much of the produce for sale was grown at Geremia Farms or transported from other farms within the state. 


Peaches, grapes, and watermelons were among the many fruits on display over the weekend. 

Apples were separated into barrels based on their variety. The Paula Red and Ginger Gold apples were labeled as Connecticut Grown. 

“We’ll have 10 varieties of apples within another month” said Gendron. 

Vegetables and herbs

Cubanelle frying peppers, white eggplant, and butter sugar corn were some of the native vegetables for sale. 

Pans of Brussels sprouts, rhubarb, and cauliflower were displayed along the doorway into the store.

There were also buckets full of Connecticut Grown zucchinis, wax beans, and cucumbers.

Atop a variety of potatoes were woven baskets containing garlic, shallots, and native onions. 

Outside there were kale and cabbage plants for sale alongside herb plants.


Geremia Farms baked breads contained a variety of berries. 

Freezers toward the back of the store housed coconut custard and red raspberry pies. Freshly baked chocolate chip, peanut butter, and oatmeal raisin cookies were cooling on the counter near the register.

“Every morning we bake apple cider donuts” said Gendron.

Geremia Farms also sells native honey from Jones Apiaries in Farmington. 

Hours and events

“We’re open from Easter until Christmas,” said Gendron. 

During the week, Geremia Farms is open from 8 a.m.-6:30 p.m., on Saturdays from 8 a.m.-6 p.m., and Sunday from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. 

This Saturday,from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Geremia Farms will be hosting a fundraiser for the Connie J. Klanica Foundation, which supports those who have been impacted by mental illness. 

The “Cut your Own” sunflowers event will be held in the field directly across from the farm stand on Barnes Road. There will be face-painting, an ice cream truck, and a Touch-A-Tractor photo opportunity.
