Town pools open this month for residents looking to cool off. Here’s what you need to know about pools and splash pads in our area.
1. Meriden’s pool is scheduled to open Monday, June 17, but the date is tentative.
Pamela Fuschino, Meriden’s administrative facilities coordinator, said the pool was patched and repainted this spring. When filled, the pool water could react to the new paint and require pool workers to balance the PH levels.
“We might have to adjust the chemicals a little bit before we open it to the public,” she said. “We need to balance the PH level and make sure it’s safe for the public.”
Meriden’s pool, located at Hubbard Park, 999 W. Main St., will be open from 1 to 6:45 p.m. Monday through Friday. The last hour of that time is adult swim.
Weekend hours are 1 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. for open swim.
Season passes are $5 for children and $15 for adults. Out-of-town passes are $10 for children and $20 for adults. Day passes aren’t available.
Fuschino said passes are available at 460 Liberty St. from 7:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. weekdays.
Children must be accompanied by an adult. The pool has lifeguards, many of whom are returning.
The city’s Parks and Recreation Department Facebook page will have updated information on the pool opening.
The city also has a splash pad at City Park, 117 Park Ave., which is open to the public.
2. Wallingford’s Community Pool, 739 N. Main Street Extension, is scheduled to open this weekend and then for the season on June 22.
While there are plans for a major overhaul to the town’s pool complex, it will be open this summer. Under the proposal, the existing pool would be demolished and replaced by two pools. The rest of the parcel would be developed into a multi-use park.
Pool passes are $15 for children to $25 for adults. Non-residents can pay $30 for a two-week pass or $55 for a season pass.
Wallingford’s pool is open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. It will be open until Labor Day this year.
3. Cheshire’s pool is open year round but does extend its closing on summer weekends from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m.
The town has a host of options, including day, seasonal and yearly passes for residents and non-residents. Aquatics Director Sheila Adams said swimmers like the flexibility of different plans. Some residents who have home pools buy winter passes to keep swimming year-round.
“You can get a family pass, an individual pass,” she said. “It depends on what you’re looking for.”
Cheshire’s pool is located at 520 South Main St.
4. Southington’s pool at Recreation Park opens Saturday.
The pool will be open from noon until 8 p.m. on weekdays and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekends.
The town’s pool and splash pad at Memorial Park opens June 22 and has similar hours.
Southington’s pools are free with proof of residency. Parents who need a non-resident pass to allow a caregiver to take their children to the pool can get one by showing proof of residency at the Recreation Department office, 75 Main St. There is no fee for that pass.
