Local businesses celebrate Cinco de Mayo

Cinco de Mayo is Thursday and to help you celebrate we gathered a list of local restaurants and businesses that will hold festivities in honor of the Mexican holiday that commemorates the Battle of Puebla, which is the Mexican victory over the French Empire 160 years ago.

Vida Mexicana — 1088
N. Colony St., Wallingford

Jerry Gallego, manager of Vida Mexicana, said the restaurant will celebrate Cinco de Mayo with a party from 3 p.m. to midnight, featuring a disc jockey along with food and drink specials. The disc jockey will play Spanish and other types of music starting at 5 p.m. The kitchen will serve until 9:30 p.m. Drink specials include margaritas, shots and beer. Mr. Taco — 69 Miller St.,

Ignacio Cardenas, co-owner of Mr. Taco, told the Record Journal the restaurant will celebrate Cinco de Mayo with live Mariachi music from 3 to 5 p.m. Clients will receive one to two free shots of tequila if they purchase food. Cardenas said celebrating Cinco de Mayo with Mariachi music is a tradition for the restaurant. “It’s excellent for us, that day the restaurant gets full,” Cardenas said. Salsa’s Southwest Grill and Bar — 2211 Meriden-Waterbury Turnpike, Southington

León López, of Salsa’s, said the restaurant is planning specials — including mojitos and sangrías — to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. A disc jockey will play a variety of music throughout the day. La Catrina — 1169 Meriden-Waterbury Turnpike, Southington

Jessica Macary, owner of La Catrina, said the restaurant will have Cinco de Mayo drink specials for margaritas, tequila and beer. Tacos will be sold at two for $5 for customers dining in. Los Mariachis — 105 N. Colony St., Wallingford

Loren Aguirre, owner of Los Mariachis, said the restaurant will celebrate with giveaways and a disc jockey from 5 to 9 p.m. The kitchen will be open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. For more information, call 203-265-1838.

Viva La Vida Mexican Restaurant — 1140 E. Main St, Meriden.

Frida Cano, owner of Viva la Vida, said the restaurant will offer a variety of food take out specials, which must be pre-ordered by today. Those who purchase specials from 4 to 8 p.m. will have the opportunity to get free aguas frescas, which will be offered in a variety of flavors. Painting With a Twist — 45 Pratt St., Hartford

In honor of Cinco de Mayo, Painting With a Twist will offer a paint class of sunset margaritas, Joel Acosta, studio manager said.
