MERIDEN — With students returning to school soon, several organizations and businesses are holding back to school backpack giveaways before the first day on Aug. 31. 

This Friday at the Meriden Green Amphitheater, the 19th annual Back to School Expo, organized by the local firefighters union, is set to take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.  

According to Ryan Gilhuly, firefighter and event organizer, 800 free backpacks with supplies will be distributed to students in pre-K through eighth grade.

“There will be pencils, pens, crayons, markers, pencil boxes, and more,” he said. “There will be a total of about 15 items for the students to take home.”

In previous years, the line has started forming as early as 6:30 a.m., according to Gilhuly.   

“It really shows how much the community needs these resources,” he said. “Being a firefighter, sometimes when I’m at a scene, it’s the worst day of these people's lives, but at this event, it’s nice to see the community together and having a good time.”

Meriden Public Schools’ Food & Nutrition Services will serve free lunch at the event. Susan Maffe, director of food & nutrition services, says it will be free for those 18 and under. 

“We are supporting this event because the event supports the children,” Maffe said.

Other local organizations expected include the Women and Families Center. Griffin Health will be hosting a COVID-19 vaccination clinic.

The Back-to-School Expo was started 19 years ago by Larry Pelletier and his family. Pelletier is now the executive director at the Beat the Street Community Center. Meriden Fire Local 1148 took over the event 10 years ago. 

Over the years, more than 10,200 backpacks filled with school supplies have been given out to the community, Gilhuly said.  

“This event is really well received by the community. When we get donations, 100% of it goes back to the community,” he said. 

Other Back-to-School events

On Saturday, local restaurant, Mind, Body, and Soul Food is hosting its second annual back to school backpack & supply giveaway. It will be held at the restaurant, 511 West Main St. at 2 p.m.

According to Deja Durant, owner of Mind, Body, and Soul Food, this is his third time hosting the event, but the second time at the restaurant. 

“I want kids to have the supplies they need for school,” he said. “And so parents don’t have to use their own money on them.”

About 200 backpacks with supplies will be given away. Durant uses his own money for the supplies, but also receives donations. 

“I do this all year round,” he said. “During the holidays, I do coat drives, turkey drives, and other events.”

On Aug. 27, the Meriden Children First Initiative has its Back to School backpack event from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Meriden Health Department at 165 Miller St. Backpacks will be available for elementary, middle, and high school students. First year college students will also be able to participate. For Meriden college students who are using public transportation, bus passes will also be provided.

MERIDEN — Dado que los estudiantes regresan pronto a la escuela, varias organizaciones y empresas estarán obsequiando mochilas y útiles escolares antes del 31 de agosto, día en que comienzan las clases.

Este viernes, 19 de agosto, el anfiteatro del Meriden Green acogerá la 19.ª Exposición Anual de Regreso a Clases, organizada por el sindicato local de bomberos, desde las 10:00 a. m. hasta las 1:00 p. m.

Según Ryan Gilhuly, bombero y organizador del evento, se distribuirán 800 mochilas gratuitas con suministros a estudiantes entre los grados de pre kínder y octavo.

“Habrá lápices, bolígrafos, crayones, marcadores, cajas de lápices y más”, dijo. “Habrá un total de alrededor de 15 artículos para que los estudiantes se lleven a casa”.

En años anteriores, la fila comenzó a formarse a las 6:30 a. m., según Gilhuly.

“Realmente muestra cuánto necesita la comunidad estos recursos”, dijo. “Siendo bombero, a veces, cuando estoy en una escena, es el peor día en la vida de estas personas, pero en este evento, es agradable ver a la comunidad junta y pasar un buen rato”.

Los Servicios de Alimentos y Nutrición de las Escuelas Públicas de Meriden servirán almuerzo gratis en el evento. Susan Maffe, directora de servicios de alimentos y nutrición, dice que será gratis para menores de 18 años.

“Apoyamos este evento porque apoya a los niños”, dijo Maffe.

Otras organizaciones locales que se esperan incluyen el Centro de Mujeres y Familias. Griffin Health organizará una clínica de vacunación contra el COVID-19.

La Back-to-School Expo fue iniciada hace 19 años por Larry Pelletier y su familia. Pelletier es ahora el director ejecutivo del Centro Comunitario Beat the Street. Meriden Fire Local 1148 se hizo cargo del evento hace 10 años.

A lo largo de los años, se han entregado a la comunidad más de 10,200 mochilas llenas de útiles escolares, dijo Gilhuly.

“Este evento es muy bien recibido por la comunidad. Cuando recibimos donaciones, el 100% regresa a la comunidad”, dijo.

Otros eventos de regreso a clases

El sábado, 20 de agosto, el restaurante local, Mind, Body, and Soul Food realizará su segundo sorteo anual de mochilas y suministros para el regreso a la escuela. Se llevará a cabo en el restaurante, 511 West Main St. a las 2:00 p.m.

Según Deja Durant, propietaria de Mind, Body, and Soul Food, esta es la tercera vez que organiza el evento, pero la segunda vez en el restaurante.

“Quiero que los niños tengan los útiles que necesitan para la escuela”, dijo. “Y así los padres no tienen que usar su propio dinero en ellos”.

Se regalarán unas 200 mochilas con útiles. Durant usa su propio dinero para los suministros, pero también recibe donaciones.

“Hago esto todo el año”, dijo. “Durante las vacaciones, hago colectas de abrigos, colectas de pavos y otros eventos”.

El sábado, 27 de agosto, la iniciativa Children First de Meriden tiene su evento de mochila de regreso a la escuela de 11:00 a. m. a 2:00 p. m., en el Departamento de Salud de Meriden, localizado en el  165 Miller St. Habrá mochilas disponibles para estudiantes de primaria, secundaria y preparatoria. Los estudiantes universitarios de primer año también podrán participar. Para los estudiantes universitarios de Meriden que utilizan el transporte público, también se proporcionarán pases de autobús.
