MERIDEN — Castle Craig Players continue their 27th season with "Almost, Maine," which opens Friday and runs for two weeks.

The play takes place in the titular town of Almost, Maine, named for its obscure location so far north it’s almost in Canada. Almost is populated by residents who never got around to organizing the town.

One cold winter night, Almost’s residents fall in and out of love in the strangest ways.

Director Oliver Kochol said he also fell in love, with the show the first time he read it.

“What I love most about this show is the script,” he said. “The language and characters are realistic, but there’s this underlying magic throughout the show that lights everything up."

According to the play's official website, "Almost, Maine " has been produced by nearly 5,000 theater companies nationally, and by nearly 100 companies internationally.

The cast of the local production includes four Castle Craig Players alumni—Jim Kane, Katie Kirtland, Jamie Reopell and Kathy Wade—along with newcomers Emily Gerrish and Corey Weldon.

The creative team includes Shawna Pelletier, production stage manager, and Dusty Radar, lighting designer.

"This show deals with love and all the good, bad, and ugly that come along with it," Kochol said. "Anyone who has ever been in love before is going to be able to find something in every scene to relate to."
