MERIDEN — Girl Scouts are once again selling cookies in the midst of uncertainty caused by the ongoing pandemic.
Meriden Girl Scout Troop Leader Leigh Neumon said despite the challenges, Girl Scouts has been able to provide a sense of normalcy for the girls involved.
“In terms of the pandemic, it has been a little bit of a challenge,” she said. “But we really try to do things as safe as possible. We get the girls outside as much as possible, they wear masks and social distance.”
Neumon has a troop of six girls who in the past sold cookies in front of Stop & Shop and inside Boscov’s department store.
She is currently working out the details of when and where her troop will be able to sell cookies this spring.
The Girl Scouts are introducing a new cookie — the “Adventurfuls” — a brownie-inspired cookie with caramel flavored creme and a hint of sea salt.
It joins the other eight offerings, including “Thin Mints” and “Samoas.”
According to a press release, Girl Scouts will continue to sell cookies in socially distant ways like “Digital Cookie” — an online platform that allows anyone to place an order and have it shipped to them for an additional fee.
“What I have noticed is girls are doing a lot more digital cookies this year than ever before,” Neumon said.
According to Girl Scouts of Connecticut’s 2019-2020 annual report, there was a 64 percent increase in the number of boxes purchased through Digital Cookie.
Cookie sales teaches scouts about money management, goal setting, decision making, business ethics and people skills.
“It’s not surprising that 80 percent of female entrepreneurs were once Girl Scouts,” said Diana Mahoney, CEO of Girl Scouts of America, in a press release. “Having the opportunity to run their very own cookie business, gives them the essential tools to achieve their dreams today and in the future.”
If you don’t know a Girl Scout, call 800-922-2770 to find cookies in your area.
“When you buy the delicious cookies you crave directly from a Girl Scout,” Mahoney said. “You’ll enjoy them more knowing you’re helping her gain business smarts and confidence to take on the world, one cookie at a time.”
