MERIDEN — City fire officials continue to investigate the cause of a two-alarm blaze that injured a firefighter on James Street Saturday.

Firefighters responded to multiple emergency calls at about 7 a.m. reporting a blaze on the second floor of 3 James St. Engine Company 2 from the Chamberlain Highway Firehouse arrived to find heavy fire from a 2.5-story wood frame multi-family home.  

They requested a second alarm and began an aggressive interior fire attack from the rear stairwell on the second floor. Members of Truck 1 searched for occupants on all floors through heavy fire conditions while engine companies worked the third floor.  

All occupants were out of the building and the fire was brought under control within an hour and a half, said Deputy Fire Chief Ryan Dunn.   

The Meriden Fire Marshal’s Office is continuing to investigate the cause and origin of the fire. 

There were no civilian injuries, but one firefighter was transported to MidState Medical Center with non-critical injuries and was discharged. The Red Cross is assisting four displaced residents.  

Fire companies from Middletown, Walllingford and Southington covered the city as all city companies battled the blaze, Dunn said.
