MERIDEN — Customers are greeted by clowns, skulls and spiders when they enter the Halloween store that recently opened in Townline Square.
Spooky Town Halloween Superstore opened on Sept. 9. The storefront, formerly home to Pier 1 Imports, is full of decorations, accessories, makeup and costumes for adults, children and pets.
Manager Evelyn Torres said she is looking forward to this year being much busier than last year.
“We did get busy last year, but not like we usually do,” she said.
Spooky Town Halloween Store, which has been in business for 20 years, also has locations in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New York and other parts of Connecticut. The stories typically open this month and stay open until two weeks after Halloween.
Torres and store associate Margaret Senberg said superhero costumes are the most popular with children. This year, characters from the Wizard of Oz seem to be popular with adults.
“People also really love to dress up their pets,” Torres said. “That’s something I’ve noticed has become very popular.”
After the pandemic canceled or curtailed Halloween celebrations last year, many are looking forward to celebrating this year.
“Halloween is my favorite holiday,” said Meriden resident Araly Espinal. “Last year I didn’t get to dress up or celebrate because of COVID, but this year I’m definitely dressing up.”
It was Espinal’s first time in the store Friday afternoon. She was looking for a costume for her dog.
“I am excited for this year,” Senberg said. “The kids missed out on everything last year. We’re just trying to get back into the routine of things.”
Other Halloween stores in the area include Spirit Halloween in North Haven.
Spooky Town Halloween Superstore, 533 S. Broad St., is open every day from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
