MERIDEN — In her 12 years working at the Meriden YMCA, Carmen Chaparro filled several roles. She worked as an assistant, fundraiser, community liaison, membership director, and even as a child care provider for a brief period.

“I love to learn new things,” she said. “Being open to them is something that we have to do in order to move on and grow.” 

The latest new thing for Chaparro is her recent promotion to branch executive director of the Meriden YMCA — the first woman and the first Latina to fill that role.

“It’s a proud moment for me to be recognized to be the first woman Latina to lead the Meriden YMCA. It’s amazing. I’ve been involved with the community since I could read,” she said.

Even though she’s filled leadership roles, Chaparro finds the most rewarding parts of her job are the ones that allow her to partner with the community. She shared a few of her favorites — the time when the Y gave away 700 holiday meals, when they held an indoor Halloween party during a snowstorm, or the time the Y partnered with her 9-year-old niece to host a coat and blanket drive. She also remembered when she worked at the New Britain-Berlin YMCA to provide free childcare to first responders during the early days of the pandemic.

“It was surreal, but it also was very rewarding to know that [first responders] allowed us to take care of their children. They had enough confianza, like they confided in us to take care of [their kids].”

Even though she grew up in Meriden, Chaparro didn’t grow up attending summer camp or other YMCA activities. Instead, Chaparro became involved with the Y when a friend asked her to volunteer at a Martini & Massage fundraiser.

“I learned the mission of the Y and how much they helped our community and its families and I definitely wanted to be a part of that amazing team,” she said.

She joined the team to lead the Y’s fundraising and community events, grow donations and build collaborations with community organizations. John Benigni, CEO of the Meriden-New Britain-Berlin YMCA, said fundraising was an important part of the Y’s operations.

“No one is turned away for inability to pay,” he said. He added that fundraisers like special events and patient campaigns allow the YMCA to give scholarships. At the Meriden Y, Chaparro has been involved in organizing their annual golf tournament and the Night of Stars–formerly known as Martini & Massage.

“[Chaparro] did a great job organizing special events and rallying people to support us. Being part of that, she made sure that they were not only fundraisers, meaning ‘fund,’ but they also had fun.” Benigni said. “Carmen definitely knows how to make events fun.”

Benigni also highlighted Chaparro’s background and her ability to speak Spanish as helping her build relationships with the community.

“Meriden has a growing Latino population, and Carmen is very relatable as a Latino female,” he said. “But it really came down to Carmen’s performance at the Y as the rationale for giving her the job. She performed well, she had been with us for 12 years. She's relatable, she's responsible, she holds people accountable, she's a great manager of staff.”

Chaparro’s parents moved to Meriden from Puerto Rico. She grew up speaking Spanish in a multi-generational home.

“I know firsthand what it's like to have a language barrier, to have financial challenges. However, [my parents] worked very, very hard and made sure that they could give us all they had,” she said. “I wouldn't be the woman that I am today if they had not instilled in me the values that they did.”

Chaparro said she was inspired by her family values of hope, dreams and love. Faith and community service were also important to Chaparro’s family.

She remembered joining a choir at St. Rose of Lima church in her early teens to bring traditional Puerto Rican parrandas to nursing home residents during Christmas. 

As the new director of the Meriden YMCA, Chaparro hopes to continue serving the community and giving others the opportunities that she didn't have when she was younger.

“When I was growing up, we didn't know about these resources. So unfortunately, I didn't have the Y. I couldn’t go to camp. So to be able to help families achieve that for their children, it's very rewarding to me”

MERIDEN - En sus últimos 12 años de trabajo en la YMCA de Meriden, Carmen Chaparro ha desempeñado diferentes funciones. Ha trabajado como asistente, recaudadora de fondos, intermediaria comunitaria, directora de membresía, y hasta cuidadora de niños por corto tiempo.

“Me fascina aprender cosas nuevas,” ella dijo. “Tener una mente abierta es algo que uno debe hacer para poder adelantar y crecer”.

Lo más reciente que le ha pasado a Chaparro es su nueva promoción a la posición de directora ejecutiva de la YMCA de Meriden - la primera mujer y la primera latina en ocupar esa función.

“El ser reconocida como la primera mujer latina en ser directora de la YMCA de Meriden es un gran orgullo. Es maravilloso. He estado envuelta con la comunidad desde que podía leer”. ella dijo.

Aunque ella ha ejercido funciones de liderazgo, Chaparro piensa que lo más gratificante  es colaborar con la comunidad. Ella compartió unas cuantas de sus experiencias favoritas - la vez cuando la Y regalo 700 comidas durante las fiestas, la vez que tuvieron una fiesta de halloween dentro del local durante una tormenta de nieve, o la vez que la Y colaboró con su sobrina para organizar una recaudación de abrigos y cobijas. También recordó cuando trabajó en la YMCA de New-Britain-Berlin para proveer cuidado de niños gratuitos a trabajadores esenciales durante los primeros días de la pandemia.

“Fue surreal, pero también muy gratificante, al saber que [el personal de primera respuesta] nos permitió cuidar a sus hijos. Tuvieron suficiente confianza para dejarnos cuidarlos [sus hijos]”.

Aunque ella creció en Meriden, Chaparro no asistía a los campamentos de verano o ninguna otra actividad de la YMCA cuando era niña. En cambio, Chaparro se involucró con la Y cuando una amiga le pidió que fuera voluntaria para Martini & Massage, un evento de recaudación de fondos.

“Aprendí acerca de la misión de la Y y cuanto ayudan a nuestra comunidad y a sus familias y decidí que definitivamente quería ser parte del maravilloso equipo”, ella dijo.

Chaparro se unió al equipo para dirigir la recaudación de fondos y los eventos comunitarios de la Y para ayudar a aumentar las donaciones y crear colaboraciones con las organizaciones comunitarias. John Benigni, CEO de la YMCA de Meriden-New Britain-Berlín, comentó que la recaudación de fondos de la YMCA es una parte importante en las operaciones de la Y.

“No se rechaza a nadie por no poder pagar”, dijo y añadió que los eventos de recaudación de fondos, como los eventos especiales y las campañas de pacientes, le permiten a la YMCA ofrecer becas. En la Y de Meriden, Chaparro ha organizado su torneo de golf anual y el Night of Stars - antes conocido como Martini & Massage.

“Chaparro hizo muy buena labor organizando los eventos especiales y reuniendo a las personas para que nos apoyaran. Al ser parte de eso, ella aseguró que los eventos no solamente recaudaran fondos, sino que también fueran divertidos”, dijo Benigni. “Carmen definitivamente sabe organizar eventos divertidos”.

Benigni también señaló el origen étnico de Chaparro y su habilidad de hablar español, lo cual le ayuda a crear conexiones con la comunidad.

“Meriden tiene una población creciente de latinos, y como Carmen es latina, las personas se identifican con ella”, él dijo. Al final, el rendimiento de Carmen en la Y fue la razón por la cual se le dio el trabajo. Ella desempeñó su labor muy bien, ella estuvo con nosotros por 12 años. Las personas se identifican con ella, es responsable, exige que las personas sean responsables, y es una muy buena gerente del personal.”

Los padres de Chaparro se mudaron de Puerto Rico a Meriden. Ella creció hablando español en un hogar multigeneracional.

“Yo sé por experiencia lo que significa tener una barrera de lenguaje, lo que es tener dificultades financieras. Sin embargo, [mis padres] trabajaron muchísimo para asegurarse que nos dieran todo lo que tenían”, ella dijo. “Yo no sería la mujer que soy hoy si ellos no hubiesen inculcado en mí los valores que me enseñaron”.

Chaparro dijo que los valores que su familia le enseñó, cómo la esperanza, tener aspiraciones y el amor, la inspiraron a ella. La fe y el servicio a la comunidad también eran importantes para la familia de Chaparro.

Ella recuerda haberse unido al coro de la iglesia de Santa Rosa de Lima cuando era joven, para llevar las parrandas tradicionales puertorriqueñas a los residentes en los hogares de ancianos durante las navidades.

Como la nueva directora de la YMCA de Meriden, Chaparro espera poder continuar sirviendo a la comunidad y ofreciendo a otros las oportunidades que ella no tuvo cuando era pequeña.

“Cuando yo era niña, nosotros no sabíamos acerca de estos recursos. Así que, desafortunadamente, yo no tenía la Y. Yo no podía ir al campamento. El poder ayudar a las familias a lograr eso para sus hijos es algo muy gratificante para mi”.
