MERIDEN — A Danbury man has been sentenced to 29 years in prison in the 2018 stabbing death of a 21-year-old local woman.

Mateus Nascimento-Dacosta, 23, was sentenced Friday in New Haven Superior Court after pleading guilty to first-degree manslaughter in February.

On May 2, 2018 around 11 p.m. police responded to 63 S. Third St. and found Alyssa Guerrero, 21, with a stab wound to her chest. She was pronounced dead at a local hospital. A man on the street told police he believed she was stabbed by her boyfriend.

Nascimento-Dacosta drove to Waterbury and turned himself in at the Waterbury Police Department. He “confessed to stabbing and killing Guerrero with a steak knife” in a recorded interview with police, according to his arrest warrant.

Meriden police initially took him into custody for violating a protective order, noting there were three separate orders in place at the time of the incident. The orders, issued in 2018, barred Nascimento-Dacosta from any contact with Guerrero.

Second floor neighbor Ivelisse Cousins told the Record-Journal in 2018 that Guerrero came to her door after being stabbed. Her husband tried to stop the bleeding.

Guerrero had been working at Floyd Manufacturing in Cromwell for about six months at the time of her death, her boss Claude Blouin told the Record-Journal in 2018. He said everyone in the shop "adopted" her and tried to help her, including getting her apartment and furniture.

"She really wanted to go to school. She idolized some of the other young girls who go to college. We were going to help her go to college," Blouin said.

Guerrero was relying on Nascimento-Dacosta for rides to work despite coworkers offering to drive her, Blouin said.
