Meriden Mall Old Navy store robbed, store employee pepper-sprayed



MERIDEN — A shoplifting turned into a robbery when two women pepper-sprayed a clothing store employee at Meriden Mall and escaped with several items of clothing on Tuesday, police said.

The robbery was reported at Old Navy, 470 Lewis Ave., at about 5:45 p.m. The employee saw the two women attempting to steal items, confronted them inside the store and they responded by spraying the pepper spray. The employee did not require hospitalization, police said.

A precise description of the two women was not immediately available.  

According to state law, a person commits robbery when, in the course of committing a larceny, the use or immediate threat of use of physical force upon another person occurs with the goal of preventing or overcoming resistance to the taking of the property or to the retention of the property.
