MERIDEN — Those looking for a job were able to get a glimpse of the opportunities available at the Meriden Public Library Tuesday night during a job fair. 

Jerry Maust, head of Reference Services at the Meriden Public Library, organized the event.

“This is the second event this year, the first was in June,” he said.  “We had 50 people in June and with this event, within the first hour, I believe we already passed that amount.”

The three hour job fair was at the library’s temporary location in the Meriden Mall,

A total of 15 businesses and organizations participated, including the Midstate Chamber of Commerce, City of Meriden,  Curtis Home, Early Childhood Development, All Pointe Care, Air National Guard, Randstad, New Opportunities, Meriden Public Schools and American Job Centers. In addition, some stores in the mall, such as Claire’s, Journeys, Ruby Tuesday, and TJ Maxx  also gave out employment applications.

Maust said the idea of organizing the job fair started with the nurses from All Pointe Care.

“They would come into the library to do interviews and I told them to inform me when they would be coming back so I could set up a space for them,” he said. “Then I got the idea to have a job fair where I could invite outside organizations.” 

“I was very excited for this event because people need to know that the library is a resource for them,” said Joan Edgerly, president of the library board of trustees. “Services and events like these are important for the community. There are many jobs available.”

Arlene Hamelin, office assistant at Midstate Chamber of Commerce, was at the event recruiting for a full time position as membership services specialist at the chamber.

“We are looking for someone who is tech savvy and knows social media,” Hamelin said.   

Meriden resident Kendra Newkirk stopped by to look at available jobs.

“My mother sent me the flier a couple days ago since she knows I’m looking for a job,” Newkirk said. “I found the job at the YMCA interesting as I really love working with children.”

Dasha Cassett, another resident of Meriden, said that she wanted to see if there were any state jobs available.

“I’m pretty interested in this dispatcher job for the City of Meriden,” she said. 

Maust plans on doing another event in the spring.

“This time we’re going to have to get a bigger space so that more businesses can join,” he said.

“Este es el segundo evento de este año, el primero fue en junio”, dijo. “Teníamos 50 personas en junio y con este evento, dentro de la primera hora, creo que ya pasamos esa cantidad”.

La feria de trabajo de tres horas se tuvo lugar en la ubicación temporal de la biblioteca en el Meriden Mall,

Allí participaron un total de 15 empresas y organizaciones, incluidas la Cámara de Comercio del Midstate, la Ciudad de Meriden, Curtis Home, Early Childhood Development, All Pointe Care, Air National Guard, Randstad, New Opportunities, Meriden Public Schools y American Job Centers. Además, algunas tiendas en el centro comercial, como Claire's, Journeys, Ruby Tuesday y TJ Maxx, también entregaron solicitudes de empleo.

Maust dijo que la idea de organizar la feria de trabajo comenzó con las enfermeras de All Pointe Care.

“Venían a la biblioteca para hacer entrevistas y les dije que me informaran cuándo regresarían para poder prepararles un espacio”, dijo. “Entonces se me ocurrió la idea de tener una feria de trabajo donde pudiera invitar a organizaciones externas”.

“Estaba muy emocionada por este evento porque la gente necesita saber que la biblioteca es un recurso para ellos”, dijo Joan Edgerly, presidenta del consejo de administración de la biblioteca. “Servicios y eventos como estos son importantes para la comunidad. Hay muchos trabajos disponibles”.

Arlene Hamelin, asistente de oficina en la Cámara de Comercio de Midstate, estuvo en el evento reclutando para un puesto de tiempo completo como especialista en servicios de membresía en la cámara.

“Estamos buscando a alguien que sea experto en tecnología y conozca las redes sociales”, dijo Hamelin.

Kendra Newkirk, residente de Meriden, se detuvo para ver los trabajos disponibles.

“Mi madre me envió el volante hace un par de días porque sabe que estoy buscando trabajo”, dijo Newkirk. “Encontré interesante el trabajo en la YMCA porque realmente me encanta trabajar con niños”.

Dasha Cassett, otra residente de Meriden, dijo que quería ver si había algún trabajo estatal disponible.

“Estoy bastante interesada en este trabajo de despachador para la ciudad de Meriden”, dijo.

Por su parte, Maust planea hacer otro evento en primavera.

“Esta vez vamos a tener que conseguir un espacio más grande para que puedan unirse más empresas”, dijo.
