MERIDEN — City officials have ordered the Meriden Raiders fall football season suspended after two positive COVID-19 cases resulted in the quarantine of 62 individuals related to the youth football league.

“Many of the quarantined individuals are school-aged children, who must now have missed attending school for 14 days,” City Manager Timothy Coon wrote in a letter announcing the city’s position. “Also these incidents require additional parental involvement due to the quarantined children being at home, thereby disrupting parental schedules.”

The decision was made in consultation with city Health and Human Services Director Lea Crown at a meeting with city officials Tuesday. Coon said the decision was not due to any fault of the Raiders, and the city will continue to assist the league.

Representatives from the league could not be reached for comment.

The first case was noted in late August or early September and caused 27 individuals to be quarantined. Another incident involved a player who was tested for the virus, but attended Lincoln Middle School for classes before receiving the test results.

Local public health officials learned of the case and notified school staff who removed the student from the classroom. The incident led to 35 more individuals being quarantined, including teammates/students from Lincoln and Washington Middle Schools.

“Connecticut Department of Public Health  has issued guidance identifying football as a high risk physical activity for exposure in the COVID environment,” Coon stated in the letter.

He also cited an increase in the city’s numbers of COVID positive cases from 44 in August to 54 at the midpoint in September.

Coon cited the city’s emergency declaration dated March 2020 for giving him the authority to suspend the league’s fall season to “further the public health and safety of the citizens of Meriden.”

Correction: The Raiders’ fall season has been suspended, not canceled as stated in an earlier version of this story and in a headline.
