MERIDEN — A local man faces charges after police said he reported a $20,000 stump grinder stolen when he actually sold it online. The man received cash for the sale and a new piece of equipment from the insurance coverage, police said.
Yusef Chater, 39, of 193 Springdale Ave., was charged by warrant Tuesday with first-degree larceny, insurance fraud, falsely reporting an incident and interfering with police.
On Sept. 7, 2020, police say Chater reported that a Vermeer stump grinder was stolen from his property. Chater said the equipment was worth about $25,000 and provided police the serial number.
Police later learned Chater sold the equipment through an ad on Facebook, according to the warrant. The warrant also alleges Chater was provided a replacement stump grinder in December 2020 because the one he reported stolen was insured.
Chater was released on $25,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Meriden Superior Court on Sept. 21.
