MERIDEN — Local artists are set to showcase their work at the 97th Annual Fall Art Show at Galley 53 next month.

“I am always excited for this,” Gallery 53 Director Sandy Goodyear said . “You never see the same thing every year. People are so creative.”

Artists from throughout the region brought their work to Gallery 53 over the weekend.

Meriden artist Katherine Desbress submitted two pieces of acrylic artwork. Desbress has submitted to about two shows a year for the last few years.

“I am no professional, but I love making art, it makes me happy,” she said. “If my art makes at least one person smile, that’s good enough for me.”

Desbress described one piece  — “Autumn Reblooming” — as an iris in your yard that blooms for just a short period of time.

The accountant said she loves to use her free time to create art to have some balance in her life.

Each artist was allowed to submit up to two pieces. The mediums included painting, photography, drawing and digital compositions featuring a mixture of subjects, colors and techniques.

“When we lay out the art, I like to tell a story,” Goodyear said. “It’s a process. You have to consider the size of the painting, the colors. You want things to be compatible.”

As of Saturday morning, the gallery had received work from over 50 artists.

Entries will be judged by award-winning Connecticut artist Karen Israel. Eight winners will receive cash prizes.

The opening reception is Oct. 2 from noon to 1:30 p.m. The show runs until Oct. 28 and free to the public.

The gallery, located at 53 Colony St., is open Tuesday to Friday, noon to 4 p.m., and Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
