Thirty years ago this month resident got ready for annual holiday traditions, braced for a unseasonal cold snap and prepared to enter the 1990s. 

Meriden held a dedication ceremony for the police station in downtown Meriden. The police station along with the new courthouse was part of a $15.6 million criminal justice complex considered one of the centerpieces of the city’s downtown revitalization effort. 

Wallingford’s police chief Joseph Bevan announced his retirement, citing health reasons, after serving as chief for more than 20 years. He had been a member of the department since 1952. 

Shoppers at the Meriden Square mall signed “America’s Greeting Card” to the Soviet Union. The card made a 50-state tour gathering signatures before getting send to Mikhail Gorbachev adn the people of the Soviet Union, expressing gratitude for contributions towards world peace.
