MERIDEN — A city man and woman face charges after police said they assaulted a woman while at Maloney’s Pub last month.

Haley Ritchie, 23, of 65 North St., was arrested Wednesday and charged with third-degree assault and second-degree breach of peace.

Handy Ellison, Jr., 23, of 1655 N. Colony Road, was arrested Wednesday and charged with second-degree assault and second-degree breach of peace.

On Feb. 24 around 12:55 a.m. police responded to Maloney’s Pub, 676 W. Main St., for a report of an assault. Police identified a woman with visible injuries to her face. The woman’s right eye was swollen shut and the eyelid was split, her left eye was partially closed and she had bruising on her face, the report said.

The woman said she was inside the pub when a man and woman, later identified as Ritchie and Ellison, began arguing. The woman went outside to the smoking area, but the couple also came outside. The woman told police it looked like Ellison was going to assault Ritchie, so she got in-between them to try and calm down the situation, the report said. Ritchie started hitting her and she tried to defend herself. The woman said she was then struck with a fist or an object across her face and eye socket, the report noted. Ellison then grabbed Ritchie, dragged her to a car and they left, the report said.

Police spoke with an employee who said she saw Ritchie assaulting the woman and tried to break it up, but was also punched in the face by Ritchie. Police were able to make contact with Ritchie on the phone. Ritchie admitted being the aggressor in the fight.

Ellison and Ritchie were released on $25,000 bonds and are scheduled to appear in Meriden Superior Court on May 12.
