MERIDEN —A man faces charges after police said he and an accomplice broke into a local business and stole cash, cigarettes and other items.
Pedro Arroyo, 37, of 150 Charter Oak, Hartford, was charged Sept. 9 with first-degree burglary, second-degree criminal mischief, third-degree larceny, conspiracy to commit those charges, and interfering with police.
On Sept. 9 police responded to the Citgo at 80 Cook Ave. for a report of an activated alarm. The owner told police he saw two people inside of the store. Officers responding saw a man walking away and began a foot chase. Police apprehended Arroyo and found him with about $682 in cash along with a folding knife, according to a police report.
Officers noticed the front door glass was shattered and the store appeared ransacked, the report said. Officers found two large bags behind a dumpster filled with items that appeared to have been taken from the store.
Store security video showed two men break into the store using a hammer and then fill bags with items. Both were seen taking items in the area of the cash register. The owner told police that is where he keeps about $650 in cash, which police noted was consistent with the $682 found in Arroyo’s possession, the report said. The second man in the video has not been identified.
Police recovered 390 packs of cigarettes, 177 lighters, cigars, loose change and other items valued at about $6,400, the report said.
