Man charged after allegedly waving pellet gun outside Meriden motel

MERIDEN — A local man faces charges after police said he waved a pellet gun outside a local motel Monday morning.

Diego Santiago, 46, of 20 N. Second St., was charged Monday with brandishing a facsimile firearm, weapons in a motor vehicle, and breach of peace. He was released on $1,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Meriden Superior Court on Sept. 28.

Police responded to The New England PK Motel, 1966 N. Broad St., around 5 a.m. on Monday after receiving a report of a man waving a rifle in the parking lot, according to police reports.

Police spoke with witnesses who said a man, identified as Santiago, came to their room holding what they thought was a shotgun and argued with one of the people in the room, the report said.

Police were able to locate Santiago, who left the scene. He told police he brought a pellet rifle to the hotel to protect himself. Police found an unloaded pellet rifle in Santiago’s vehicle, the report said.
